Around the world, there are thousands of centuries-old handwritten copies of the Greek New Testament. In their long life, many of these manuscripts have been subject to heavy use, war, neglect, fire, and flood. This tumultuous existence has left some manuscripts unreadable because the words on the page were smudged over, erased, or destroyed by water and fire.
For centuries, it was impossible to read these lost words—they were gone forever. But today there is a revolutionary technology called multi-spectral imaging (MSI) that is able to reveal the hidden text! By photographing the manuscript at multiple points across the light spectrum and then using advanced software to create a composite image, scholars can see and study what was once visible on the page. MSI is changing the field of digital preservation and is an untapped resource for the study of New Testament manuscripts.
CSNTM has the opportunity to purchase this specialized equipment in a portable system so that it can be taken to manuscripts around the world. The only barrier is the price tag: $125,000. Thanks to dozens of generous donors over the past few months, more than half the amount needed has already been raised.
